Facing Giants: Courageous Leadership Through Faith
Every leader encounters moments when the challenge in front of them feels overwhelming. These “giants” can appear in many forms: difficult decisions, organizational resistance, financial pressure, strained relationships, or responsibilities that stretch beyond current experience.
For many leaders—especially those early in their leadership journey—these moments can trigger doubt. Questions surface quickly:
Am I ready for this?
Do I have what it takes?
What if I fail?
Leadership history, both biblical and contemporary, shows us that these moments are often the very places where leadership maturity is formed.
The story of Joshua offers a powerful leadership insight that transcends time and context. After the long leadership of Moses, Joshua was entrusted with leading an entire nation into unfamiliar territory. The assignment was enormous, and the land ahead contained formidable opposition.
Yet the message Joshua received from God was clear:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
This message carries a leadership principle that remains relevant today: the presence of giants often indicates proximity to purpose.
Challenges rarely appear when leaders remain comfortable. They appear when leaders are advancing into greater responsibility, influence, and opportunity.

In other words, giants often guard the territory of growth.
For leaders who approach their work from a faith perspective, this truth provides powerful reassurance. The presence of difficulty does not mean we are outside of God’s will. In many cases, it means we are stepping into the very place where God intends to strengthen our character, deepen our trust, and expand our capacity.
For leaders who may not yet share a faith background, the leadership lesson still holds: meaningful progress almost always requires confronting obstacles that initially feel intimidating.
Great leadership is rarely developed in comfortable environments.
It is formed in the moments when leaders must choose courage over fear, conviction over hesitation, and forward movement over retreat.

Leadership Development: Lessons from Facing Giants
Leaders who learn to face giants effectively tend to develop several critical leadership qualities.
1. Courage in Decision-Making
Leadership requires decisions that affect people, resources, and long-term outcomes. Giants often appear when leaders must act with incomplete information. Courage allows leaders to move forward while continuing to learn.
2. Resilience Under Pressure
Challenges test emotional endurance. Leaders who face obstacles directly develop the resilience necessary to guide teams through uncertainty and change.
3. Clarity of Purpose
Giants force leaders to reconnect with their mission. When the purpose is clear, the challenge becomes more manageable.
4. Growth in Capability
Many leaders discover that challenges reveal strengths they did not know they possessed. Difficult assignments often accelerate leadership growth.
5. Trust Beyond Personal Strength
Faith-centered leadership reminds us that leadership is not sustained by human strength alone. When leaders rely on God’s wisdom and guidance, they gain stability even during uncertainty.
A Perspective Shift: Giants as Development Opportunities
One of the most transformative shifts a leader can make is changing how they interpret obstacles.
Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?”
leaders can begin asking, “What is this developing in me?”
This mindset does not deny the difficulty of the challenge. Rather, it reframes the experience as part of the leadership formation process.
When leaders respond this way, giants lose much of their power to intimidate. What once appeared to be a barrier becomes a pathway for growth, influence, and deeper wisdom.

Closing Thought
Leadership is not defined by the absence of giants. It is defined by the willingness to face them with courage, wisdom, and faith.
Every giant carries within it the potential to refine character, strengthen conviction, and reveal a deeper level of leadership capacity.
The question every leader eventually answers is simple: Will the giant define the moment, or will your courage define it?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the opportunities and responsibilities You place before us as leaders. When challenges appear larger than our experience or confidence, remind us that You are greater than every obstacle we face.
Give us courage to move forward, wisdom to make sound decisions, and faith to trust that You are guiding our steps. Strengthen our hearts so that we lead with integrity, resilience, and clarity of purpose.
May every challenge we encounter develop greater character, deeper trust in You, and a stronger capacity to serve others well.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
